English Abstract

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest towards the principles of sustainability, especially with the growing concerns regarding renewable resources.

The future of renewable resources is a primary concern for most developing countries including the Middle East.

Looking at the construction sector in Jordan, it is faced with the pressure of meeting the increased demands of resources, where it imports approximately 98% of its resources from neighboring countries.

These challenges encouraged the application of green building principles, which has led to the development of the Jordan Green Building Guide (JGBG) that includes widespread technical standards.

As for the existing buildings, the current assessment systems do not acknowledge the fact that the construction industry has developed into a more sustainable industry providing more options and advancements for new buildings.

Jordan is considered as one of the many countries in need for a green building assessment system, particularly because of the poor resources and inefficient consumption of the resources.

The majority of green building research focuses on the future rather than presenting a solution for existing surroundings.

This thesis will aim to contribute to a better understanding on the concept of green building assessment tools and the role it plays in reaching sustainable development by establishing a green building assessment system for existing buildings in Jordan.

It will focus on studying the existing rating systems worldwide, in addition to the JGBG to determine the criteria that can be used for assessing existing local buildings.
