Abstract EN
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is established on nuclear magnetic resonance.
Its name comes from the interaction of certain atomic nuclei in the presence of an external magnetic field when exposed to radiofrequency electromagnetic waves of a specific resonance frequency.
Although MRI has been extensively used in medical examination, the applicability of this technique as a non-invasive detection to plant science researches is still at the exploration stage.
MRI is capable of gaining information with high spatial resolution, both structural and biochemical, as well as on temporal changes within the plant.
Plant research applications involving MRI range from functional imaging of the biotic and abiotic stress responses, plant physiology and development, water mobility, biodiversity, to gene functions and metabolism.
Nuclear MRI of plants may provide valuable, new insight into several aspects in the plant science researches because of its nondestructive nature and the sufficiently high spatial resolution of the method.
