Background and Aim: Hyperbilirubinemia in neonates is a common condition, that faced the pediatrician in his practice, and many cases of them were put on phenobarbital as a management.

This study aim to: assessment of the efficiency of phenobarbital in treating hyperbilirubinemia in neonates.

Materials and Methods: it was an analysis study of 60 neonates (with no risk factors) who had hyperbilirubinemia and asked a medical advice in children hospital (neonatal emergency department).

Results: our total group contained 60 patients, 20 of them were put on phenobarbital, 16 cases were improved (80%), and the rest of the group 40 patients did not receive any medications, 35 of them were improved (87.5%).

Conclusion: it is better to avoid giving phenobarbital to neonates with hyperbilirubinemia, who are full term and with no risk factors
