Among the many aromatic plants known to the ancient Egyptians, Myrrh was the most important.

This plant, which is a kind of gum-resin extracted from plants of the genus Commiphora and originally grows in south-western Arabia and Punt, was well known to the Egyptians from an early period of their history.

It was first mentioned on Palermo Stone from the reign of Sahure in the Fifth Dynasty, which indicates that it was then imported from Punt.

Myrrh was extensively used in ancient Egypt in the daily rituals in the temples, in funeral rites and in medicine.

Thus, it was commonly used in treating several diseases in the form of medical ointments and unguents, but it was also an important component in making aromatic oils, in preparing frankincense and in mummification
