Critics' Views on the Issue of "Truthfulness and Falsehood"
The issue of truthfulness and falsehood is one of the important critical issues in Arab criticism ever since ancient times, and it has sparked a great controversy in the critical milieu.

However, critics are divided into two groups: some of them support the idea that truthfulness and falsehood are tackled in Arabic poetry, and the other group opposes this idea.

Moreover, Arab critics' views concerning the issue of truthfulness and falsehood in poetry differ.

Some of them relate the value of poetry to truthfulness.

This group of critics believed that a poet must be true to his poetry by conveying words and ideas without lying or exaggeration.

Those critics support their argument by the fact that one must tell the truth; thus, they consider that "the best poetry is the most truthful".

However, there is another group of critics that regards lying as the finest language for poetry; thus, unlike the first group, they consider that "the best poetry is the one that tells lies".

There is also a third group of critics who are confused between the earlier two groups and who do not have a clear view of which is better.

Hence, truthfulness and falsehood are among the terms and the critical criteria based on which poetry and poets are evaluated ever since the pre-Islamic era where the issue of the truthfulness and falsehood was tackled, and where a group of poets and critics preferred honesty and truth, whereas another group tends to exaggerate.
