Abstract EN

This study aimed at determining the impact of the characteristics of the board of directors (their number, independence, number of meetings) on the capital structure.

The samples included 68 companies from the industrial and service sector of companies listed in the Muscat Securities Market through the financial statements of those companies for the year 2018.

The data were collected from the financial statements and were analyzed through the use of the statistical analysis program (SPSS) using descriptive data analysis and correlation analysis.

The results revealed that there is a statistically significant negative effect of the independent variables (number of board members, number of independent members and number of meetings) on the capital structure.

The study recommended the necessity of preserving the independence of the members of the Board of Directors and recommended increasing the activity of boards of directors through increasing the number of meetings.
