Since the occupation of Algeria, the French authorities have worked to create a developed European economic sector directing its production to the French market in particular, and to foreign markets in general.

at the outbreak of world war I between 1914 and 1918, France exploited the products of this sector and the agricultural wealth of the colony as a reservoir and reserve that extended the needs of French consumers with distinction, to the extent that Algeria's exports exceeded French imports, which the trade balance achieve a surplus during the war period.

accordingly, Algeria formed a rear base for France, supplying it with foodstuffs, and represented a difficult number in all its other colonies, because of its wealth that it knew how to control and exploit to serve its economy through the mechanism of a commercial sector.
