Abstract EN

The positions of scholars on orientalism has been varied ; some people supports its orientations, while others completely reject it.

and between the two positions, there is a moderate orientation which confirms that orientalism has an impact which may be positive or negative.

some attention have been devoted to study the methods of advanced orientalists in chronolizing the Arabic literature started by the German orientalist, Karl Brockelmann.

however, according to our knowledge, the later orientalists' approaches in chronolizing the Arabic literature was not given any interest despite the fact that it is worthy of study because of its methodological orientations that differ from the forerunners' methodology.

thus, in order to frame the study, it has been decided to study one of the methods of the late orientalists only.

this study has selected the method of the French orientalist, Andre Miquel, in his book named 'Arabic literature'.

there are several questions related to his method such as ; what are the philosophical premises from which he proceeded? what are the differences between him and the orientalists who preceded him? and what are the problems of applying his method in chronolizing the Arabic literature?
