Al-Azhar Mosque is the seat of knowledge in Arab and Muslim world.

Many conspiracies have been, and still are, concocted against it since its establishment.

In the twenties of the past century, particularly in 1436 AH/1928 CE, a missionary attack was made by one of the most prominent evangelists, namely Samuel Marinus Zwemer (1867 – 1952 CE) who frequented Al-Azhar Mosque in an attempt to Christianize Muslims.

A file preserved in the archives of the Board of Trustees and Ministers at the Cairo's National Archives fell into my hand.

The file is entitled "Complaints against Missionary Activities against Islamic Religion" Inside it were documents entitled "Consideration of American Evangelist Priest Zwemer regarding Distribution of Publications Criticizing Islam inside Al-Azhar Mosque".

It was archived under Archival Code No.

(0075_050371).

It is a thirty-one page file, nineteen of which is about Zwemer's missionary activities, two envelopes and three letters.

" I was motivated to examine this file as part of my research entitled "Zwemer's Entry into Al-Azhar Mosque in 1436 AH/1928 CE: Based on Archives of The Board of Trustees and Ministers.

The introduction highlights the historical existence of missionary activities in Egypt.

Section 1 gives a biography of Zwemer, the history of his missionary activities before 1928 CE.

Section 2 speaks about Zwemer's entry into Al-Azhar Mosque in 1928 CE and spotlights the publications he distributed among students and scholars in Al-Azhar Mosque.

Section 3 explains the attitude of students, scholars and Al-Azhar Mashyakha towards Zwemer's missionary activities.

Section 4 sheds light on the stance of the Egyptian state regarding Zwemer's entry into Al-Azhar Mosque.

The research concludes with an evaluation of the incident.

It is also based on the Minutes of Meetings of the House of Representatives and the Senate, in addition to secondary sources and periodicals that were contemporaneous to the incident.
