Abstract EN

When a person died in Egypt outside his city, during the Greco-Roman era, it was common for him to be transported to be buried in his hometown, with what was distinguished by what looked like a card (τάβλη), which is known as the "carriage card of the dead.

" It is a small piece of wood containing Greek or Demotic text, or both, to identify the deceased and identify his body during its transfer from one place to another.

It seems that the main function of the card here is to determine the identity of the deceased and the destination of his body for burial in his hometown, especially if the death occurred far from his hometown, as the people were - and still are - preferring to bury their dead in the family graves in their hometown if they lived far from it.
