Improvisation, a musical practice which consists of spontaneously inventing music at the very time of its sound production.

The question posed is then the following: is improvisation not one of those cases where the ontological inquiry imposes itself on the musicologist as a prerequisite? Do not aesthetic in the evaluation and appreciation of improvisation or methodological (in the analysis of improvisation) misunderstandings result precisely from the confusion of our ontological intuitions on the subject? Yet it seems precisely that our understanding of improvisation, but also the way in which we appreciate it, do indeed depend on the ontological presuppositions that we maintain about it.

It therefore seems necessary to know what kind of thing improvisation is before being able to develop an adequate musicological knowledge of it.

It is to this prerequisite that this essay will be devoted.
