Abstract EN

This research examines the deviation in understanding the Qur'anic texts of Dr.

Muhammad Shahrour’s book entitled as "The Book and the Qur'an - A Contemporary Reading".

This book is of great importance especially to contemporary rationalists, who depend on their minds in understanding the Qur'anic texts, away from the recognized principles of interpretation.

The researcher has adopted the analytic critical approach and divided this paper into an introduction, two chapters, and a conclusion.

In the preface, he mentions the research problem, the importance of the topic, its objectives and previous studies.

In the first chapter, he gives some information about the author and his book with a summary of the most important contents of it, and the principles of understanding that the author relied on.

In the second chapter, the researcher has explained the author’s deviation from the principles of interpretation of the Qur’an by Qur’an, and the interpretation of the Qur’an according to the Sunnah, the Qur’an which interpreted unanimously, the interpretation of the Qur’an with the sayings of the predecessors (Salaf), and the interpretation of the Qur’an by using Arabic language.

The researcher gives some examples of the author’s words which were mentioned at each part, indicating the deviation from understanding the Qur’an.

There are several results that the researcher concludes.

The most important of which is the main reason for this deviation is not using interpretation principles, the lack of reliance on them, and the reliance on the absolute mind without controls, under the pretext of contemporary reading of texts.

Therefore, the prevention of such deviations is to follow the principles and controls that the Islamic scholars have followed since the beginning of Islam.
