The concept of “the abstaining sect”, which has a history of transformations and volatility as ancient Muslim jurists made it an established rule in the construction of “the religious policy”, is based on the specific precedent conduct of the predecessors.

This concept is characterized by a reinforcing link between the religious and the political, which entails a definitive separation between the believers and the non-believers.

“The abstaining sect” has seen an important semantic expansion with the contemporary jihadists, through the establishment of “Takfir”, linking it to the abstention, and heavily penalizing it.

The semantic amendment was meant to adapt this sectarian creed to the contemporary aspirations of these jihadi groups, of their Salafi background.
