Abstract EN

Steel slag is generated from variety of various processes and may generally be categorized as electric arc furnace (EAF) slag, basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag, argon oxygen decarburization (AOD) slag, or ladle metallurgy furnace (LMF) slag.

When used as an aggregate or in powdered form for various cementitious applications, like concretes, mortars, alkali-activated materials, or soil stabilization, the literature demonstrates that the influences on material properties may be highly variable, which implies that predicting effects on material properties is extremely difficult.

This paper presents a review on usage of Electric-are furnace steel slag (EAF) within the construction industry for sustainable development.

Improvements and results on usage of steel slag in cement production are discussed by addressing its beneficial effects and possible drawbacks.

so as to realize sustainable development, large-scale utilization of steel slag is important thanks to its huge scale production, which if dumped causes environmental problems.

Steel slag usage as cementitious material.

because of its huge production and dangerous influence due to dumping of slag.

during this context, the development industry can play a very important role.

Steel slag usage as aggregates in cement and concrete production or as supplementary cementing materials has a crucial environmental impact also higher long-term strength and improved long-term durability is achieved.

In the present situation steel slag has not yet reached a high level of utilization in Libya.

Possible reason is non availability of reliable data on its properties.

More studies should be done with locally available material to overcome the difficulties encountered.

However, high levels of utilization of steel slag in some developed countries giving encouraging results, give hope for the future.

Therefore, investigations should be done in the future for potential uses steel slag on Libyan grounds.
