Urban form and transportation system impact on smart growth

Abstract EN

The smart growth of metropolitan centers is a critical component of sustainable development and the creation of smart cities.

Libyan cities have seen urban expansion in recent years with scattered structures and low densities.

In this study, the influence of land uses, urban design, and private and public transportation systems growth in the Libyan city of Al-Bayda was investigated.

The research was based on gathering and examining plans of the State of Libya's Urban Planning Office, the experiences of Arab and foreign nations and comparing them to the chosen city's actual reality.

By analyzing the information gathered, Vehicle fuel consumption was calculated using the data collected from the city's fuel stations based on monthly consumption.

The census and populace increment were calculated from the city census office.

After assessing the data acquired related to the roads and their classification , the related issues resulting from fuel use, waste of space, increased infrastructure costs, and land scarcity and unpredictability were addressed.

The paper concludes that good growth can be achieved through the urban distribution of compact cities with high population density that directly contributes to become smart cities.

It has also been observed that results of the haphazard expansion of the city, its urban shape and transportation infrastructure become unsuitable for the construction of a sustainable smart city.
