Abstract EN

Traditional architecture is characterized by its great diversity because it meets the material needs of the population while taking into account the social, economic, cultural and environmental framework.

The present study aimed to analyze the vocabulary of the architectural heritage of the city of Ghadames, in particular the traditional habitat found there, in order to explore the most important means that were used in the formation of the habitat of Ghadames, in order to know and extract all the lessons necessary to facilitate the process of using these means to produce contemporary buildings and equipment adapted to their environment.

In this research paper, an approach was adopted by establishing an information base to define the vocabulary and elements of traditional architecture that takes into account the environmental determinants related to desert areas through a field study and analysis.

of selected models of traditional dwellings in the city of Ghadames, in particular the need to protect oneself from the sun and to make maximum use of lighting and natural ventilation.

In general, the aim is not to imitate and transfer traditional architecture or to apply design theories, but rather to benefit from the results of research and at its analytical level in a good understanding of architectural treatments for establish suitable housing for good use and to find a better relationship between man and the environment.

The research came to a set of findings linking the principles of traditional Libyan architecture to environmental design strategies and showing the feasibility of using its vocabulary as a strategy to produce architectural designs with a comfortable environment for users, through a group of means (such as: courtyard, corridors, openings with networking ...

etc.) which all combine effective natural lighting, shading, ventilation and privacy while allowing an exterior view.
