English Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to define the main success factors of distance learning at high education institutions and explaining some of the challenges that students are faced with distance learning at Al-Aqsa University.

Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative study was applied involving interviews and focus group discussion with students with analysing of documents of learning management system at Al-Aqsa University.

Findings & Recommendations: This research is exploratory in nature.

Findings of the study expects to improve our understanding of student to support in distance learning, in which analysis is based on good practices and challenges for improvement of Al-Aqsa University.

From the interview results, the key success factors of distance learning at high education institutions during COVID-19 pandemic are (1-Course Design 2- The Quality of E-learning 3- Interaction & Communication 4- Diversity of Learning Sources 5- Supporting The learners).

The study recommended to 1) obtaining qualification to deal with e-learning environments.2) Adjust recorded lectures in terms of reducing time, reducing knowledge and focusing on what is important.

3) Support students with open internet packages in consideration of their financial circumstances and using SMS in e-learning Practical implications: Findings of this study will reveal success factors and challenges based on practices and lessons learnt which is useful as reference to universities, taking into considerations the fact that each university has not been established to address specific challenges in its own unique circumstances as COVID 19.

Originality/value: This research is adopted as baseline framework for analysis of student support for universities.

Further in-depth study is needed to understand how various aspects of student support contribute to success in distance learning.
