Abstract EN

Linguistics appeared in the twentieth century and has developed further in the twenty-first century in order to improve the thinking and research methods in human language and open up broad horizons for humans to better understand and know deeply his or her language.

Despite the development in the field of experimental phonetics, there are the views and perceptions of the precursors that are still proven scientifically correct and accurate as much as opinions and interpretations that require a review and reconsideration.

Based on this,the present research aims to reveal the pioneering views of the ancient Arab scientists, review the prevailing ideas in the study of the subject of "The Arabic Vowels" and identify the strengths and weaknesses of their linguistic heritage on this subject.

We have relied in this study on the comparative method which compares the ancient’s achievements in phonetics with the findings of the modern phonetics.

Among the most prominent results of this research was the affirmation of the ancients’ leadership in precisely defining the vowels of Arabic, separating between not only consonants and vowels but between long and short vowels as phonemes and allophones as well and determining the nature of the relationship between them, in addition to a pioneering view of the vowels producing organs and their vocal characteristics, as well as the extent to which these predecessors are affected by the written form in their phonetic interpretations.
