The primary interest of manuscript students since the seventeenth century until not so long ago, was based on researching the texts of these manuscripts and researching their texts in preparation for their dissemination through the science of "philology", which is the field concerned with the scientific study of heritage texts, and includes the critical scientific practice of manuscript texts.

thus, it represents the art of investigation in the Arab-Islamic heritage, which is concerned with revealing the original text, and returning the materials in it to their first sources, in order to later study the text, and show the thought contained in it.

the material aspect of the manuscript did not receive attention and attention, and the information related to the vessel of knowledge seemed to be a superfluous matter.

until the science of the manuscript or the so-called “codicology” appeared in 1944 by the French philologist Alphonso Dain, this science was concerned with studing the elements that compose the manuscript, regardless of the text of the book.
