Abstract EN

In this article, we have tried to reveal the most important characteristics of the inhabitants of the island of Djerba, as well as the most important professions in which they were active.

And we learned that the inhabitants of the island of Djerba were distinguished by sectarian, religious and ethnic diversity, and they were also distinguished by tolerance and coexistence between different religions and sects.

During the period studied, the island of Djerba experienced a high population density compared to the rest of the regions of southern Tunisia, due to the economic mobility that the island experienced.

In this study, we have limited ourselves to the most important crafts that characterized the island, in particular in the textile and pottery industries.

This also allowed the island to become an exporter of these goods, which were distinguished by high quality, despite the traditional methods used, whether in the textile or pottery industry.

However, the invasion of European products, especially European textiles and blankets, reduced the number of factories and the production volume of the textile industry
