Abstract EN

Ellipsis is a recurrent linguistic style the Holy Quran that needs more consideration in its translation.

It concerns all parts of speech starting from single particles to a whole clause.

In this context, this paper is aiming at examining the way how Jacques Berque dealt with the elliptical sentences in his translation of Holy Quran into French.

The analysis of the selected examples revealed great unlikeness in the methods of rendering elliptical conditional sentences.

In some verses, the translator recovered the ellipted clause; in some other verses he maintained the omission with reference, or without reference, to the ellipted clause.

In some verses, the translator was not aware of the ellipted clause in conditional sentences so that he inverted the conditional sentence in the translation of some verses.

In sum, it is necessary to cope with ellipsis in conditional sentences in Holy Quran to get successful translation of its meanings.
