Politics of memory research looks at how the past is remembered or represented in the present.

although collective memories have always influenced domestic politics and international affairs, international relations (IR) discipline remains relatively silent about the importance of the mnemonic dimension in the study and analysis of world politics dynamics.

collective memory is thus assumed to become manifest in world politics in a range of different forms: as a country's political strategy and its public identity, as a source and guarantee of its own national value system, and as an international behaviour.

Accordingly, this study will attempt to clarify the impact of politics of memory on international relations, arguing that common collective ideas such as collective memories and associated historical lessons constitute temporal phenomena that influence relations between political societies, shaping States' mutual perceptions.
