The emergence of the union movement was historically linked to social and economic conditions ,the goal of union work was primarily a demand for improving work conditions and wages however, the emergence and development of the union movement in Algeria was linked to the struggle for independence, despite the miserable social and economic conditions that Algerians experienced under the weight of colonialism.

unemployment, poverty, racial discrimination, and harsh working conditions, as the emergence of the trade union movement in Algeria is linked to the French union, based on this, we will discuss in this article the historical process of the Algerian trade union movement and the overall transformations that it has known since its inception in the colonial period, and its role in that period until independence and the transformation that the trade union movement experienced after independence, the stage of unilateralism and unionism, where the general union of Algerian workers was the tool of power in its project.

the country experienced a social and economic crisis and events that precipitated the transition from unilateralism to partisan pluralism and, accordingly, union pluralism, which was approved by the 1989 constitution and the emergence of new, multiple and independent unions from the general union of Algerian workers.
