Zawaya, plural form of the Arabic word Zawiya, meaning a traditional religious campus, in the regions of Tuat are considered amongst the most important scientific institutions in spreading sciences and in the preservation of manuscripts with regard to their fundamental roles, which have been performing since their establishment through devoting a big part of their endowments to support the education and scientific activities.

they also provided a number of traditional libraries (khizanat) that constituted a basic source for students and devotees alike.
