This paper aims to identify the components of national identity (the national character) of the Algerian national movement, and the positions of the Algerian national movement on the French cultural project.

using the historical method and content analysis, the study tool was to build our analysis network based on Nicholas Hans' theory of nation formation.

the study found : patriotism is what led the patriotic movement to reject the colonial cultural project and try to replace it with an educational project that includes national dimensions.

the Algerian character is an extension of the Arab Islamic nation, but it has its own peculiarity in the following aspects : history, language and culture, geographical environment (climate-terrain).

the colonial cultural project had fruits in Algeria, which is the presence of a French class that at that time represented the elite and denied the history of its nation and did not keep pace with the revolutionary liberation movement.

the Islamic conference in 1936 was a blessing and a curse at the same time, a blessing because it was considered the first national bloc and gathering that included movements of different ideologies, and a curse because it expressed the retreat and retreat in demands.
