Abstract EN

Drawing mainly on British archival materials and original sources, this research studies the “AL Hasa Oil concession”, which was the first oil concessions in the Arabian Gulf.

The then “Sultan” Abdul-Aziz Ibn Saud, The Sultan of Najd and its Dependences, granted the concession in 1923 to the New Zealander Frank Holmes who was acting as a representative of the Eastern & general syndicate LTD.

Holmes, however, failed to carry out the concession agreement and concession lapsed, resulting in the withdrawal of the concession by the Sultan in 1928.

It is also shown throughout this research that Frank Holmes played an important role in obtaining the concession despite the opposition of the British government which favored the Anglo-Persian company.

This research focuses also on the policies that were followed by The Sultan Abdul-Aziz to resist the British government pressure not to grant the concession to the eastern & general syndicate LTD.
