Freedom of opinion and expression are among the basic freedoms that constitute the pillars of a democratic society, and an indispensable condition for achieving the full growth of the individual.

However, this freedom, when exercised olutely, may turn into chaos and lead to incitement to hatred and aggression due to an infringement on other freedoms such as those related to respect for religious sanctities.

Therefore, international law has tried, through its various rules and institutions, to balance between ensuring the effective exercise of these two freedoms.

The European Court of Human Rights, as the guardian of public order in Europe, could- at least partially- be, through its abundant jurisprudence, an example worthy of being followed in this field, given that it consecrates a form of relative protection for religious sanctities, including Islamic ones, when facing freedoms of opinion and expression.
