1881.

European travelers began to pay increasing attention to Mahdia since the Ottoman period, especially from the sixteenth century, when commercial exchanges between European countries and coastal cities began, and thus represented the region a field for the ambitions of major naval forces.

The trips throughout the Ottoman period were of exploratory purposes, some of which were of a military nature and the other of a scientific nature, thus contributing to presenting a picture of the various areas of the city of Mahdia during the Ottoman period, specifically the nineteenth century, which a more accurate understanding of the racial and ethnic ethnic diversity of the region, its economic and commercial specificity, as well as architectural heritage and local customs.

The writings of travelers were credited with introducing this coastal area.

Despite apparent humanitarian goals, it seems that the majority of these European travelers, particularly the French, have contributed through their writings to managing the foreign presence in the country through reconnaissance operations, which ultimately led to the transformation of Tunisia into a French colony in 1881.

Les voyageurs européens ont commencé à accorder une attention croissante à Mahdia depuis la période ottomane, en particulier à partir du XVIe siècle, lorsque les échanges commerciaux entre les pays européens et les villes côtières ont commencé, et ont ainsi représenté la région comme un terrain pour les ambitions des grandes forces navales.

Les voyages tout au long de la période ottomane s'inscrivaient dans un cadre exploratoire, dont certains étaient de nature militaire et l'autre de nature scientifique, contribuant ainsi à présenter une image des différents quartiers de la ville de Mahdia pendant la période ottomane, en particulier le XIXe siècle, avec une compréhension plus précise de la diversité raciale et ethnique de la région, de sa spécificité économique et commerciale, ainsi que du patrimoine architectural et des coutumes locales.

Les écrits des voyageurs ont été crédités d'avoir introduit cette zone côtière.

Malgré ces objectifs humanitaires, il semble que la majorité de ces voyageurs européens, notamment français, aient contribué par leurs écrits à gérer la présence étrangère dans le pays par des opérations de reconnaissance, qui aboutirent finalement à la transformation de la Tunisie en colonie française en 1881.
