Today's children live in a digital age, surrounded by computers as sources of information, even before they reach school.

In response to this reality, researchers and teachers are being asked to rethink the role of cognitive education in preparing children for this technological-digital world.

The first part of this article deals with some issues related to the learning context from a future point of view, and discusses how education has shifted from the classical model to the cognitive model as a primary source for preparing educational programs; As programs capable of training children in a reality in which new digital platforms appear daily.

The second part of the article focuses on cognitive education that may provide appropriate foundations for educational programs that promote self-learning in the digital age.

This article concludes with an example of peer-to-peer learning, or "peer education", using computers, a program that emerged from the integration of the theories mentioned.

Research-based results that indicate the effectiveness of this program are also presented.
