بدت الحياة في عصر الحداثة ذات اعتبارات تحمل في طياتها تعقيدات و عقبات ليس لأن الإنسان قد واجه تغييرا جذريا ؛ و لكن لأن الأولوية لم تعط للإنسان بقدر ما أعطيت للتغييرات الجديدة التي تتحكم في حياته.

و من هذه التغييرات دور التكنولوجيا بمزاياها و عيوبها مما أدى إلى التفكك في الحياة، الذي بدوره قاد البشرية للعيش في دائرة مغلقة حتى تصل الحياة إلى ميناءها الأخير يظهر الكاتب المسرحي الأمريكي المر رايس هذه الحقيقة في مسرحيته The Adding Machine، و هي مسرحية تحاكي الاتجاه التعبيري الذي ازدهر في ألمانيا بعد الحرب العالمية الأولى.

English Abstract

Modern life is in many considerations the life of complications and snagging not because Man is changed physically or mentally but because life itself has transformed completely as the priority is given not to Man but to the new details that “control” his life.

One of these details is the role of technology with its advantages and disadvantages.

This disintegration in life leads humanity to live in a locked circle until life reaches to its final port.

Elmer Rice, the American playwright shows this fact in his paly The Adding Machine, a play that is imitating the Expressionistic tendency that flourished in Germany after the First World War.
