Abstract EN

This is a textual linguistic study concerned with the study of Kuwaiti folk proverbs; a textual applied study that adopts a descriptive approach to study the structure of Kuwaiti proverbs, to aim the reasons of the effectiveness, continuity and popularity of those proverbs.

These Proverbs were subjected to Robert De Beaugrande’s seven textual standards: Cohesion, Coherence, Intentionality, Acceptability, Informativity, Situationality and Intertextuality.

The author has also used Kuwaiti books published, and within reach of Kuwaiti users, on the subject of proverbs, adopting the content of those books as a sample of this study, which examines the linguistic means compatible with De Beaugrande’s standards of textuality.

The seven standards were distributed on three chapters: the first one tackles the text itself, the second relates to the user of the text and the third goes around the context of the text.

Among the most prominent results is that the structure of proverb has a significant impact on his spreading without being affected by cultural and civilizational changes, in addition to the cultural, literary, religious or heritage background that influences proverbs formulation; e.g.

some use well-known figures or symbols to ensure proverbs acceptability to the recipients.

This study recommends to study a lixical and textual of the contemporary Kuwaiti proverbs to track the changes that have occurred because of the civilizational and cultural changes occurring in Kuwaiti society, as well as the use of Kuwaiti proverbs in teaching the grammatical and morphology structure of standard language of Arabic.
