Abstract EN

There is still hope among the Arab people to build a historical dictionary, which is a record of the Arab heritage, and chronicles the Arabic vocabulary and meanings through the Consecutive stages of language.

Currently, more than institution has a project to build this dictionary in order to invest the resources and energies directed towards the historical Arabic dictionary, and to guide those who try to build this dictionary to the foundations and controls that help them overcome the problems of editing the desired dictionary, this study seeks to provide a viable methodological vision for editing the historical Arabic dictionary.

The study is committed to the analytical approach based on explanation, criticism and deduction, out of the reality of Arabic lexicography, and in the spirit of the other languages experiences in building historical dictionaries.

This study aims to provide a reference framework to set the standards of editing the historical Arabic dictionary through ten axes in which the external form of the dictionary overlaps with its internal content.

These axes are : arrangement, editing of forms (Vocabulary), editing of functional meanings, definition, citation, dating, identification of users (Sayers), levels of use, and documentation.

The study has reached a number of results, including : provide a perception of the specifications of the historical Arabic dictionary, and proposing a realistic methodology for editing the Arabic dictionaries in general, and the historical dictionary in particular.
