Stigma in mental health

Stigma refers to a form of shame related to a certain person or circumstance.

The crucial and detrimental consequences of stigma heavily impact the access that individuals have to mental health care.

It has been widely documented those individuals with mental health issues or their relatives and loved ones experience a level of ignorance and stigma.

The aim of the current review is to explore the topic of stigma further to support and strengthen anti-stigma campaigns to aid the stigmatized group and the community around them.

A review of the literature on stigma experienced by patients with mental health conditions, family members, and the field of psychiatry was conducted via 60 articles obtained through searches in Google Scholar, Science Direct, PubMed, BJPsych, and BMC.

Releveant literature was narrowed to the last decade with both original research and article reviews.

The literature presented contained information relating to stigma towards patients, family, and psychiatry.

Stigma is one of the major hardships within the field of psychiatry.

Overcoming this obstacle can achieve a milestone within the field.
