Abstract AR

Background : Factor V (FV) Leiden mutation varies in different populations.

Objectives : To study the prevelance of this mutation in Syria.

Methods : We analyzed 316 blood samples from healthy blood donors.

265 males (ages: 17-76 years) and 51 females (ages: 18-57 years) were included in the study.

DNA was extracted from nucleated cells and the critical 267 bp fragment was amplified by PCR.

Results : 13.3% of the Syrian blood donors tested are carriers for FV Leiden mutation (total 316; heterozygous 41; homozygous 1).

Conclusion: The finding of the high prevelance of Factor V mutation in Syria suggest the possibility that this mutation originated in this region.
