Abstract EN

The study of literature, in any language, generally deals with texts characterized by a linguistic level more elevated than those commonly encountered in either scientific writing or on the practical level of everyday speech.

teaching literature to non-Arabic speakers poses a novel challenge to both the teacher and the students at once.

it multiplies the number of tasks linked with the optimal way in which to interact with the studied text in such a way as to guarantee that the communication process will be successful and that a sufficient level of comprehension will be attained.

these tasks relate to the necessity of referring to the readers' primary culture as well as that of weighing references with cultural dimensions in the literary text in the readers' own mental balances.

this paper presents a view on teaching Arabic literature, employing examples from works of the traditionalist school via immersion in the text, following the method of in-depth reading following the pioneers of the traditional school in their reading ancient Arabic literature.

it also discusses some of the most prominent problems of methodology, conceptualization and application, that students face, especially that draw upon a diverse set of cognitive resources, including grammar, morphology, vocabulary, rhetoric, and prosody to provide for a comprehensive and systematic reading that contributes to a deeper understanding of the text and to the interconnection of the features of the Arabic language with one another.

it finally discusses the problems that face non Arabic speaking students, when dealing with readings of this kind, as well as the extent to which both translation and reference to students' prior knowledge may serve the acquisition of said understanding and the elucidation of the meanings recorded in writing within the commentaries on Arabic literature composed by the pioneers of the traditionalist school of Arabic literary analysis.
