Abstract.

The study investigated the Rural-Urban Continuum area between the cities of Riyadh and Al-Kharj, by analyzing four satellite images with sequential intervals covering the study area (downloaded from the US Geological Survey website), in order to monitor the changes in land cover uses during the study period.

using the analytical inductive approach in writing the theoretical part, the descriptive method in describing the uses of land cover in the study area for the year 2019, and the quantitative analytical method in calculating its areas and measuring the percentages of changes during the study period using the techniques of (Arc Gis) and (Erdas) programs.

the study was able to diagnose the patterns of land cover uses in the study area and to clarify the effect of geographical factors in drawing the picture of its spatial distribution for the year 2019, which was formed in five main patterns, respectively, which are desert lands, which accounted for 89% of the total area for the year 2019, the agricultural area amounted to 162.9 km², or 6% of the total area, while the urban cluster occupied an area of 114.09 km², representing 4.2% of the total area.

the water occupied an area of 12.13 km², representing 0.4% of the total area.

roads represented 0.4% of the total area.

the analysis of changes and the measure in the percentage of change in the uses of the land cover during the years 1988-2000-2013-2019 showed that there were changes that could be classified into two types : the first category of uses that expanded and increased its area during the study period was represented in the urban mass, where the area doubled between 1988-2019 by a percentage of 228.5%, and water uses that have doubled nearly three times.

the second category in which the area of use was decreased during the study period, is the desert lands whose decrease did not exceed 20.8 km2, and there was a fluctuation in their area during the study period.

agricultural lands decreased by 61.12 km², by 37-52%.
