Abstract AR

Abstract EN

Like other Muslim philosophers‘Avcinna was interested in the Man; and because he was a great writer as well as a great philosophenthe Man came to be utilized as a symbol in some of his writings‘especially his stories and poems.

In this research‘the researcher addresses the symbolism of Man in the Story of Hai Ebn Yakdhan (Hai*the Son of Yakdhan)*one of his moSt well-known and even famous philosophical Stories in Islamic heritage.

Avcinna’s Story contains many human symbols like Hai Ebn Yakdhamthe narrator‘his companions*the tourisl‘the king«the inhabitants‘the nations‘the population

Moreoventhe researcher talks about hu- man symbolism in this Story through explaining the aforementioned symbols.

It should be noted that moSl of the symbols in the Story of Hai Ebn Yakdhan are Static symbols that have specific unmanipulatable meanings‘as the case with ‘Hai Ebn Yakdhan*‘a recurrent expression symbolically referring to as the ‘active mind*.

A few of the symbols in this Story can be connotatively interpreted with more than one meaning* for inStance‘the narrator and his companions; although some researchers and old Story-analysts may agree that the narrator symbolizes the *mind? or the 'speaking self and his compan- ions could symbolically refer to the ‘powers of the self or the ‘physical powers’ ‘yet that doesn't mean that they wouldn't have further symbolic meanings.

It is quite evident that the narrator may further symbolically index ‘the philosopher Avcinna’ ‘and the companions refer to the ‘trends of thought* dominating Avcinna’s age.
