The word and the meaning are among the main issues of literary criticism; it has been tackled by various scholars and from different perspectives in order to determine the role of each one in attributing to the literary text its artistic value, and to acknowledge for each its priority.

hence, the main question in this issue is what makes literary work special? the word or the meaning? or both of them? Arab critics are of different opinions.
