Fifty male patients with evidence of proliferative diabetic retinopathy were taken as cases, and a second group of 50 male patients with early background diabetic retinopathy served as controls.

Results : 46% of the cases had never been smokers compared to 52% of the controls; 26% of the cases were ex- smokers compared to 30% of the controls; 28% of the cases were current smokers compared to 18% of the controls.
