Quranic schools had a role in preserving the Algerian Islamic identity from the time of the French colonial presence until its exit by force.

it was incumbent upon Algerian scholars to contribute in the construction and building of Algeria financially and intellectually through the opening of Quranic schools.

the latter have been closed during the colonial era.

one of the Quranic schools is the Sheikh Belkabir’s school in Adarar, which was followed by most of the other Quranic schools in Algeria, especially in the south.

an example of these schools is Sheikh Sharif Bakkar’s school in Metlili where the Holy Quran has been memorized and taught.

in this presentation, we explore the role of Sheikh Sharif Bakkar’s school in memorizing the Holy Quran as well as investigating the methods that the sheikh followed when teaching the Holy Quran.

eventually, we conclude that this Quranic school contributed to the graduation of many students who acquired the faculty of language, and these graduates themselves have worked as teachers in the governmental schools after independence.
