The term and meaning have received the attention of literary critics and each of them had different positions and opinions on this subject.

Some people gave the word the meaning and some others gave the meaning to the word, and some considered the words superior and the other consider meanings as such, another group of them held that both are the basis of rhetoric and they had doubts in this regard about the most important consideration between the word and the meaning.

Al-Sharif al-Mortada, as one of the critics of the fourth century, expressed different views about the word and the meaning in his books.

He sees the effect of using the word in the phrase more than the meaning, on the other hand, he makes the phrase based on the meaning and not on the utterance and the word.

The duality of word and meaning or image and content has continued to dominate the minds of critics.

Until the strong, accurate and comprehensive arguments of Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani were able to avert this duplicity and establishing the concept of systems as a valid and solid foundation.

This study attempts to study the opinions of Abdul-Qaher al-Jurjani and al-Sharif al-Murtada in the field of word and meaning, based on the descriptive analytical method and it balance in expressing their opinions on this level.
