Abstract EN

Semantic roles is a modern linguistic research field that studies the relationship between the head of the structure and its arguments in the grammatical structure.

Through this study in this paper titled “Semantic roles in the modern Arabic linguistic studies”, we aim to set the semantic criterion in classifying verbs.

We try to represent the conceptual structure of the intransitive and transitive verbs in a way that summarizes the universal forms, which formulate the relationship between the constituents of the grammar structure.

Each grammatical structure consists of a lexical element representing the head of the structure and another or more related elements that accompanies it.

The relations between the head and its arguments are called semantic roles.

The head of the structure is associated with nuclear roles, and may be combined with unnecessary adjunct roles if the context requires it.

We determine, in this work, the regular forms of semantic roles in the Arabic language by studying the nuclear system of the arguments in the intransitive and transitive verbs that includes two types of roles motional roles and event roles.

The nuclear system of the semantic roles defines the internal language system, which combines the characteristics of the various structures.

This work reflects the central role played by the verbal head.

It has a semantic role in the distribution of semantic roles, and a functional role in determining the functions and positions of the arguments according to the taxonomic classification to which it belongs.
