This paper presents an analytical study on the role of tribes in the Libyan political system during the period 1969-2022, a time of significant changes in the system's type and composition.

the study addresses the growing influence of tribes in Libyan politics, a trend that contrasts with the ideological slogans of the ruling regimes.

it aims to understand the relationship between tribes and the ruling system in Libya, examining the policies and mechanisms employed by the regime to use tribes as tools for gaining popular legitimacy, which it lacked.

additionally, it explores how tribal elites benefited from their relationship and alliance with the regime to advance their interests.

the study's methodology involves describing and analyzing political events, decisions, policies, and the ideological foundations utilized by ruling regimes in their dealings with tribes, an integral component of the political system.

this is achieved through an analytical approach to the political role of tribes, examining the policies, tools, and images the ruling regime crafted in its relationship with tribal elements.

the study concludes that the role of tribes in Libyan political life is a reality that must be pragmatically addressed.
