This paper explores the meaning and precept of backbiting, exploring a number of arising matters.

These include some strongly proven precepts along with other controversial ones that have been stated by some scholars.

It addresses the impact of backbiting on ablution and fasting, and the precept of repentance from it.

It discusses its precept and how to seek forgiveness from the slandered, alive or dead, present or absent, as well the position of the slandered when asked for forgiveness, and whether the person’s approval of being backbitten justifies slandering him or not.

Finally, it discusses the punishment of backbiting, disciplining the slandering child, and the precept of accepting the testimony of the slanderer.
