Abstract EN

This study's role is to investigate the evolution of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in the Mediterranean, considering that the region has become a safe refuge for many asymmetric security threats that appeared after the Cold War, principally, the threat of terrorist groups after the 9/11 attacks.

The study reveals also the various strategies taken within the framework of NATO to confront these groups.

After description and analysis, the study concluded that Nato's mission is no longer military, but it acquired political, economic and social dimensions on the basis of the necessity to link between political field in the Mediterranean Region to what it is security.

As a result, the alliance has developed its own institutional structures and expanded its objectives to eliminate the sources of the asymmetric terrorist threats to support security and cooperation in the region.
