Abstract EN

This study aimed to build a spatial database that includes the preparation of classification maps of the land use/Land cover in the al-Karkh district for the years 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020 using satellite images of Landsat 5, 7, and 8 and for the sensors (TM, ETM, OLI) respectively, by adopting the supervised classification technique and the maximum likelihood method, and according to Anderson’s system for classification of land use/Land cover, then calculating the area of each class and its percentage for each time period.

al-Karkh district is one of the districts of Baghdad Governorate, with an area of (315) km2 .

the results of the study showed that there is a change in the land cover classes through the increment of urban class geographically and spatially and its expansion over the other classes, as its area increased dramatically from 95 km2 in 1990 to 113 km2 in 2000, and it continued to increase to reach 122 km2 in 2010, and then became 142.7 km2 in 2020.

the most affected classes are the barren lands, as the area decreased significantly from 97.4 km2 in 1990 to 85.5 km2 in 2000, and to 83.9 km2 in 2010, and the decline continues significantly in 2020 to 45.2 km2 .
