The research seeks to clarify the difference between the terms position, precedence, and delay through Sibawayh's discussion of them in his book, and the impact of that on his definition of the two sentence patterns in Arabic, and the impact of that on the grammarians who came after him, especially Ibn Jinni and Abdul Qahir al-Jurjani, and their treatment of some issues in accordance with these two concepts.

Explaining the ambiguity in the meaning of precedence and delay according to some interpreters of the Holy Qur'an, then presenting some grammatical issues that can be addressed through precedence and delay between sentence elements.
