A socio-pragmatics study of telephone closings between Iraqis

Abstract EN

The people may communicate with one other considerably more easily and smoothly than before thanks to telephone calls.

This allows people greater space to appreciate the need of keeping their privacy when communicating to one another.

The current study aims to: First, Figure out how do pragmatic elements employed by males and females both formal and informal sittings affect the format sequence of telephone closings.

To achieve this goal, the study hypothesized the following: First, telephone closing among females are characterized by extended and detailed turns more than males.

The study adopts the sequence structure model of “Emanuel Schegloff (telephone closings 1973).

The current study finds out: First, the highest percentage of using the pragmatic elements in the closing section comes with the informal calls of the classmate (females) in the first place and in the second place, the formal calls of the head of the department (females), that females are distinguished by more detailed and prolonged turns, more than men in the closings section.
