the reason that led to the emergence of secularism is the similarity that the representatives of this trend made to the causes of backwardness, which is the lack of a correct understanding of religion and sharia.

the wrong derstanding of religion was accused of closing every door to ijtihad and rational thinking, which calls for openness to the other.

both Shibli al-Shamail and Farah Antun sought to applying secularism to the Arab and Islamic world in order to achieve modernity, work to achieve an intellectual and scientific renaissance, and change social conditions as Europe did previously.
