Trade union movement in Algeria has witnessed several developments forming a militant and political union thought that maintained societal and state stability.

despite facing colonial challenges, the early beginnings lacked credibility as they failed to shape a strong demand-driven struggle.

the formation of the first trade union aimed to support the political struggle of workers against colonialism, defend national principles and advocate for independence, thereby, multiple unions emerged, notably the general union of Algerian workers which has remained a pioneer even after independence.

thus, our study addresses the most important stages of trade union activity in Algeria, identifies their key changes and circumstances by taking the general union of Algerian workers as a model.
